THE DAY THE MUSIC BECAME IMMORTAL: FEB. 3 ANNIVERSARY

OF BUDDY HOLLY’S DEATH BRINGS HIS DREAM TO LIFE:

TO SUPPORT NEXT GENERATION OF MUSIC’S GREATS

ONLY HOLLY GUITAR AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC TO BE AUCTIONED FOR GRAMMY® FOUNDATION’S GRAMMY CAMPS

January 31, 2012 (New York City) The one and only Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959, a day many believed was the “day the music died,” as immortalized in Don Maclean’s famous song, “American Pie”, which first hit the charts 40 years ago this month.  Jackson Browne noted when doing his album track, “True Love Ways” for the album “Listen To Me: Buddy Holly”, that Holly’s death on February 3, 1959 “was not the day the music died; it was the day the music became immortal.”

True to this spirit, Songmasters, in collaboration with Buddy Holly Guitar Foundation, will auction the one and only “Listen To Me” Holly Guitar through MusiCares to benefit the GRAMMY® Foundation’s Grammy Camps as part of the Person of the Year Award celebrations on February 10th.     Only a limited number of these unique, hand-built re-creations of Buddy Holly’s customized Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar and hand-tooled leather case exist. Of these, all but one of the Holly Guitars – this “Listen To Me” guitar – have been awarded by the BHGF on a long-term “legacy loan” basis to guitar icons and legendary performers such as Pete Townsend, Peter Frampton, Jackson Browne, and Graham Nash, among others.

The auction of this extraordinary instrument – the only one available to the public - will bring to life one of Buddy Holly’s personal dreams: to support exceptional young musicians and music innovators. Songmasters’ Listen to Me: Buddy Holly campaign continues to prove that Holly’s music – and musical legacy – lives and thrives.

Brand New Buddy Holly Tribute Record

Songmasters’ unprecedented Listen To Me multi-media campaign is underway, with the PBS Television broadcast of the tribute concert, a tribute album…and will continue through February, 2012, the Anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death. Holly had a brief but brilliant life and career through an astonishing array of concerts, recordings, and charitable programs.  The campaign began with the Verve Forecast release of “LISTEN TO ME: BUDDY HOLLY,” a star-studded new collection featuring contemporary takes on the pioneering rock ‘n’ roller’s immortal songs, performed by such era-spanning artists as Jackson Browne, Cobra Starship, Zooey Deschanel, The Fray, Eric Idle, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, Jeff Lynne, Imelda May, Natalie Merchant, Pat Monahan (of Train), Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt, Patrick Stump, Ringo Starr and Brian Wilson.  Proceeds from the groundbreaking multi-media campaign will benefit a range of music charity programs  that provide unique opportunities for the next generation of music’s great artists and innovators.

The Listen To Me: Buddy Holly campaign kicked into high gear with Songmasters’ “Ultimate Buddy Party,” an extraordinary concert event held at The Music Box in Hollywood on what would have been Buddy’s 75th birthday, September 7th.  The all-star tribute proved an historic rock ‘n’ roll moment all its own, with an incredible line-up of performers supporting  Songmasters’ goal of raising monies and awareness for a new wave of musical artists.  Many of the stars featured on “LISTEN TO ME: BUDDY HOLLY” – including Stevie Nicks, Patrick Stump, Chris Isaak, Lyle Lovett, and Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Victoria Asher – rocked the house in the company of a host of superstar guests.  Among them were such avowed Holly fans as Graham Nash, Boz Scaggs, Raul Malo, Michelle Branch, Shawn Colvin, Paul Anka, and famed guitar slingers James Burton and Albert Lee.

As if all that weren’t enough, a series of video tributes were featured throughout the show, including homages to Holly from Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Natalie Merchant, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson, Pat Monahan (of Train), Imelda May, and the one and only  Eric Idle, of Monty Python’s Flying Circus fame.

“Buddy Holly saved our lives at boarding school when we were 13, 14, 15,” noted Idle, whose idiosyncratic interpretation of “Raining In My Heart” closes “LISTEN TO ME: BUDDY HOLLY.”  “We were in black-and-white England of the 50s and there was this great musical revolution that happened.  It was Buddy Holly, Elvis, and the Everly Brothers, and we were completely hooked.”

Buddy Holly Album Project

This is the first year in The Songmasters on going charitable efforts, “The celebration of Buddy Holly who would have celebrated his 75th Birthday this year.

At his young age, Buddy Holly was passionate about keeping his music alive and helping other young artists to do the same. Beside Holly’s musical legacy, Buddy Holly was a visionary in the early music business, developing his own label and his own studio well before these ideas became current in the industry. Holly also had other dreams to help talented peers break into and succeed in music. “Buddy did everything he could to make sure that talented young musicians and songwriters got a real chance,”explains Maria Elena Holly. “He would be especially thrilled, as I am, that so many outstanding artists are part of this effort to honor his personal commitment to recognize and help great young musical talent.” It is especially heartening that so many young artists want to join in fulfilling Holly’s dream as well.

Little did he know that his young life would be tragically cut short in February…the day the music died but his wish was fulfilled as Jackson Brown so eloquently expressed when he said, “The music didn’t die, the music became immortal”. His music influenced so many young artists..and we are talking about his legacy still today. Both old and younger artists were influenced by this young genius and the music he made.

Artists of all generations have given their time and talent for the love of Buddy’s music and to help the Songmasters’ program’s charitable efforts.

Kicked off with an acclaimed tribute album, Listen To Me: Buddy Holly, produced by Peter Asher (who has a lifelong relationship with Buddy’s music) featuring Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Ringo Starr, Pat Monahan (of Train, Jackson Browne,Patrick Stump, Cobra Starship, Imelda May, The Fray, Brian Wilson and more.

Artists at this once-in-a-lifetime event came from three generations and included Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Gram Nash, Shawn Colvin, Patrick Stump, Chris Isaak,Gram Nash, Cobra Starship, Legends like Phil Everly and Paul Anka …who knew and worked with Buddy…and more.

The Listen To Me: Buddy Holly celebration continues a year-long celebration that began on Buddy Holly’s 75th birthday and will continue his legacy for generations to come.

A Tribute to Iconic Opera Singer Maria Callas

Posted by showbizdeluxe on October 5, 2011 at 3:15 PM Comments comments (0)

Widely regarded as the greatest opera singer and performer of all time, Maria Callas is the original diva, the ultimate opera icon. Her life story, voice and performances intrigued, thrilled and inspired audiences during her lifetime and continue to do so today. Thirty-four years after her death, Maria Callas is not only the world's bestselling soprano but also EMI Classic's bestselling artist of all time.

Diva, artist, style icon. Who was the real Maria? The Callas Effect is a deluxe presentation bringing together 2CDs of her finest, most personal recordings, a new documentary DVD featuring fresh insight from those closest to her and a lavishly illustrated 124-page hardcover book with an essay illuminating and honouring the essence of Maria Callas, the woman and the myth.

Callas dévotées will find new material and food for thought in The Callas Effect. Those less familiar with her personal and musical allure will find an attractive and compelling introduction. Callas is an artist whose music sounds as unique and inspired today as it did in her lifetime and has been named as a musical influence by such diverse popular artists as Celine Dion, Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris, Jason Mraz and Rufus Wainwright.

The CDs contain exquisitely interpreted arias from nearly 30 operas, including such favourites as O mio babbino caro, Vissi d’arte and Casta diva.

The newly-produced DVD documentary-memoir features performance footage, recordings and still photos combined with powerful first-hand accounts of Maria Callas’s genius from witnesses of all walks of life. Opera singers, stage directors, actors/actresses, backstage theatre crews, recording staff, impresarios and opera fans who queued for days to buy tickets to her performances all describe how Maria Callas exerted a unique and extraordinary effect on them. Among the interviewees are singers Mirella Freni, Joyce DiDonato and John Dobson, former General Administrator of the Royal Opera House John Tooley, stage director John Copley, EMI Classics Callas biographer Tony Locantro, critic and broadcaster John Amis – and Maria Callas herself, in conversation with Lord Harewood.

The glossy, hardcover book contains a new article by Ira Siff, translated into German, French, Spanish and Italian. Siff suggests that Maria Callas, without doubt the most influential opera singer of the 20th century, had such a far-reaching impact on opera that her influence is still gaining momentum today. Her timeless, universal appeal captures the imagination, not only of opera lovers but of people who have never set foot in an opera house.

Maria Callas was “a bundle of contradictions: artistically radical, socially conservative, fiercely independent, obsessed with appearances.” In other words, she was human, real flesh and blood, as were her gripping interpretations of the operatic roles that she portrayed with intense characterisation and maturity of emotional expression.

Siff chronicles Callas’s life story as the daughter of poor Greek immigrants to America, her studies in Greece with Elvira de Hidalgo, who trained what she described as the “tempestuous, extravagant cascades of sound, as yet uncontrolled, but full of drama and emotion”. We learn about Callas’s debuts, the launch of her international career and her championing by Tullio Serafin, the variety of roles she took on, both heavy and bel canto. She learned new roles in record time, grasped new languages, complete with their inflections and subtleties. We follow her trajectory to legend status, learn how she revolutionised performances with vocal virtuosity and dramatic impact, how she shaped her talent and transformed her physique, losing 70 pounds and inspiring Luchino Visconti and Franco Zeffirelli to mount new productions for her. Callas became a style icon, fell in love with Aristotle Onassis and lost him to Jackie Kennedy. She died, aged 53, of a fatal heart attack in 1977.

Her career was short but, as Tito Gobbi’s daughter, in the DVD documentary, quotes her father as saying, “Maria is immortal.” – And she is.
